A New History for Rye

 A New History for Rye

Using Parson’s History of Rye, Bill Varrell’s “Rye on the Rocks,” and other published sources, Alex Herlihy of Rye Historical Society has created a detailed time line of four centuries of Rye History and it is growing daily.  Soon this time line will turn into a running narrative and eventually a new history of the town.

Also included are details from his personal 20th century knowledge and that of others. It is this last category that information is needed.

If you have any facts, stories, anecdotes, myths or photos to loan etc., please send them to: [email protected]. In addition, the history will include historic newspaper accounts of Rye, primary sources in the museum such as probate, tax and other records, town reports and many other print sources. However, it is the human stories, both direct and handed down from earlier generations, which will truly enrich this history.  In the future RHS will hold gatherings at which people can share stories which will be used in the history. Also needed are volunteers to interview older members of the community and to help with other aspects of this new history project.

We welcome everyone’s contributions so that this will be a true village history. Contact the above e-mail if you are interested.
