New Books on Rye

Two new Books: Scroll down to see both please:

New Book Published on the History of Rye Beach   “An Oceanside History at Rye Beach and the Farragut”

Tom Clarie, co-author of “Just Rye Harbor” with his wife Rosemary in 2004, has written a unique story that chronicles the coastal area of Rye, the Rye Beach precinct, Little Boars Head in North Hampton and Rye’s greatest hotel – The Farragut (1883-1975)located where the green space is today at the end of Central Rd. on the boulevard. Using newspaper articles, Clarie gives us an intimate look at the lives of those who came to summer on the NH coast and some who came to stay here. For him Rye Beach is a generic term that stretches south to Lille Boars Head where Atlantic Ave meets the sea. But this is not just an anthology of news articles about the rich and famous; there is much here about the natural and human history of coastal Rye and North Hampton and beyond that is a very important part of the history of those communities. Clarie is a master at culling from thousands of news articles from the mid 1800’s up through WWII. He follows these sotries in chronological order and quotes, summarizes and comments. There are many more books waiting to be written from those endless news sources for this was the great age of newspapers and there were endless correspondents  everywhere waiting to report of the full range of human behavior. But “Oceanside” will both enlighten and entertain you for now.

I intend to make liberal use of this fine book in the new history of Rye I am writing.

For sale at local businesses and bookstores as well as the Rye Town Museum for
$30. Also available at Rye and North Hampton Libraries.

New Book of Photographs Published about Rye

You may have heard that Rye photographer and resident Bob McGrath recently published a book, Rye in Focus: One Year, One Town, an exquisite collection of photographs featuring an insightful foreword by artist and Rye resident Catherine Raynes.

“In this intimate collection of photographs presented in a beautiful 112 page hardcover book, Bob presents a twelve month glimpse of life and the natural surroundings of Rye. Through Bob’s photographs we come to fully appreciate the everyday beauty found in simple contrasts of color and texture, the effects of the seasons on the landscape, and the people of Rye who make living and vacationing here such a joy.”

This was a project that Bob took on purely for his love of art; he published a very limited number of books and priced them to encourage ownership throughout the community. Copies are on sale for $25.00 each at local businesses throughout town, the town museum or they may be ordered from Bob directly by calling 603-566-3871.
